One of my favorite parts of cruising is waking up in a brand-new destination and deciding how to spend the day. Whether you're snorkeling in crystal-clear Caribbean waters, exploring ancient ruins, taking a scenic train ride through Alaska, or sampling local cuisine in Europe, the right shore excursion can easily become the highlight of your vacation.
Most cruise lines offer a wide variety of shore excursions that can be booked directly through the ship. These are a great option for many travelers, especially those who prefer the convenience of booking everything in one place.
That said, I often choose to book through trusted third-party excursion companies instead, and it's a decision I've been very happy with over the years.
Better value: Third-party excursions are often more affordable than similar tours offered by the cruise line, allowing you to stretch your vacation budget further without sacrificing quality.
More variety: While cruise line excursions tend to focus on the most popular attractions, third-party companies often offer unique tours, hidden gems, local experiences, and specialty excursions you won’t always find through the ship.
Smaller groups: Many independent tours limit the number of guests, creating a more personal and relaxed experience. Instead of traveling with a large bus full of passengers, you may find yourself in a small van or intimate group where it’s easier to interact with your guide, ask questions, and truly enjoy the destination.
Over the years, I’ve personally booked excursions through Viator, Shore Excursions Group, and Project Expedition on my own cruises. I’ve had excellent experiences with all three companies and have no hesitation recommending them to my clients. They offer high-quality tours around the world, easy online booking, and many excursions come with port-return guarantees for added peace of mind.
Of course, there are times when booking through the cruise line still makes the most sense, especially for longer excursions, destinations with greater travel distances, or if you simply prefer the convenience of staying within the cruise line's excursion program. Every itinerary is different, and I'm always happy to help you determine which option is the best fit for your cruise.
Below you'll find links to my favorite shore excursion partners. I've personally used each of them and trust them to help make your time in port just as memorable as your time onboard.
